The Story Behind the Film

Unlike most Bollywood films that stick to predictable romantic or action storylines, Shamshera's plot is based on real events. The movie tells a tale about what happened during Operation Blue Star when thousands of Indian Sikhs were evicted from their homes in 1984 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi after two Sikh bodyguards assassinated her. According to The Independent, an estimated 762 people died and 3,250 more were injured, and 30,000 Sikh men had gone missing by June 1985 as a result of Operation Blue Star. Before its release earlier this year, there was concern among some members of India's Sikh community about how Shamshera would depict that historical event.
