Phone Booth is an American action-thriller film that first appeared in 2002, starring Colin Farrell and Forest Whitaker and directed by Joel Schumacher (Falling Down (1993), Batman & Robin (1997)). Farrell plays Stu Shepard, a publicist whose life changes when he picks up the phone in his New York office. The caller claims to be an anarchist threatening to kill him in 24 hours unless he does exactly what he says on the phone and in person.

A murder takes place

Think about what happened before and after a murder. The police can't solve a crime without evidence, so they will want to know all of your movements. They will want to see what was on your phone or computer in case there is any incriminating information there. When police investigate a crime scene, they first secure it using tape and cones, then secure it further with safety screens once they are ready to take photographs or begin a detailed forensic examination of things like fingerprints and DNA. Sometimes they use drones or even robots in extremely large-scale investigations like airplane crashes where human bodies need to be retrieved from wreckage spread over thousands of acres.

The perp calls the protagonist

You have 48 hours to give yourself up or I will kill someone every 12 hours. The movie consists of 24 shots, one for each hour of that time. It all leads up to a dramatic conclusion in which, like everyone else in his situation, he must decide whether to save his own life at someone else's expense. In 2013, Phone Booth topped Rotten Tomatoes' list of best-reviewed thrillers and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Film Editing. Movies similar to Phone Booth include Tower Heist starring Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, and Casey Affleck as well as Safe House starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. Both films were released in 2012 and follow a similar plot structure with one important difference: They're sequels rather than remakes.

The pressure builds up with time while the protagonist looks for him

For those of you who missed John Travolta in such hit movies as Pulp Fiction, Wild Hogs, and Face/Off, here’s a great chance to see him at his best in 2002’s Phone Booth. This is an action movie which is also a mystery thriller and drama. The story focuses on Stu Shepard whose acting career goes downhill once he gets married to publicist Pam McFadden. But with his new play opening tonight, he thinks things are finally looking up again. However, that changes when he takes a call from a man claiming to be God who threatens to kill him if he doesn’t say what he wants within one hour – with each passing minute being counted by gunshots getting louder.

The call becomes more frequent, pressuring our character

He should start working for someone who can make a difference. Soon, we see our hero in a corner. He is looking for a way out and wants to hang up on them but realizes there's nowhere else to go. The conflict of our story has brought us here, and we can only see it becoming more intense from here. Whether he will take their offer or not, one thing is certain: his world is about to change forever. This helps to create anticipation in our audience, putting them at attention because they are eager to know what will happen next. In the film, when you begin with something that requires your audience's imagination, you're left without any control over how they perceive it and feel about it.

Our character finds out why he’s being called

It’s important to watch your own character: what is he like? A liar? Or a man of integrity? How does he react when he finds out why he’s been called? What does that say about him as a person? By contrast, how do his companions react—and why? These are all things you should be asking yourself before starting a screenplay. Of course, you may find that your characters start to take on lives of their own while you write—which is one reason it's so important to be active and mindful during your writing process. Still, knowing who they are ahead of time can only help you better understand and flesh them out later.

He can’t take it anymore, but answers anyway

It’s not a matter of if I take him seriously, it’s a matter of when. And it won’t be long. As I step outside, I can still hear his voice. What do you think about just starting over again with someone else? He seems like he might be worth a shot...he doesn’t talk much but there is something about him that draws me in...we could try again...it might help us both get over some things we each have trouble getting over on our own...I think I want to be with him...what do you think?...you aren’t answering me anymore, are you? You don’t want to talk anymore, do you?

He opens up and vents his frustration at being targeted by this killer

Oh, what did I do to deserve that? he says. How about being a journalist, okay? Is there something wrong with that in your eyes? The killer is clearly listening as evidenced by his muted laughter. The thing you should know about me if we were to spend any time together is that I have absolutely no interest in hurting you, all right? But I will end you if you hurt me. That is a promise. And then I will come back here and find whoever sent you after me and they will wish they had never been born because they sent someone who cannot be stopped. Are we clear on that or would you like to test me?
